Not only patents and trademarks, but also design registrations can be searched and analyzed in order to find out if the outer appearance of a product might be protected by a registered design. Searches can be performed with respect to national designs or registered community designs.
The search can be restricted to a certain kind of product, such as a piece of furniture, as listed in the Locarno Classification for Industrial Designs. It can also be limited to certain companies or geographical areas.
